CHITTAGONG COLLEGE

Background of the establishment

This institution was born in 1836 as Chittagong District School. Thirty-three years after its establishment, it was upgraded to a higher secondary school in 1869. Since then, it has been known as Chittagong Government College or Chittagong College. The college started its activities in a Portuguese-era establishment at one corner of the parade ground next to College Road in present-day Chittagong. After being upgraded to a college, Mr. J. C. Bose was appointed as its first principal. From 1909, a science department was introduced in this college at the higher secondary level along with the arts department. In 1910, this college received recognition as a first-class degree college from the then Calcutta University. Accordingly, teaching of undergraduate and graduate (honors) level subjects in Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics was started from this college. From 1919, English was added to the undergraduate subjects and philosophy and economics were added to the supplementary classes. In 1924, the first Muslim principal of this college was Shamsul Ulama Kamaluddin Ahmed. During his tenure, the college progressed rapidly. Sher-e-Bangla A, K, Fazlul Haque laid the foundation stone of the Muslim Hostel during this time. During Shamsul Ulama's time, the tradition of publishing the college magazine started. The most notable event of his time was the introduction of co-education. In 1926, the first hostel of this college was established.

Although all undergraduate subjects were withdrawn in 1955, the undergraduate (honors) subjects in English, Bengali, Economics, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics were reintroduced in 1960. The undergraduate (honors) classes in Zoology, Botany and Statistics were introduced in 1962. Extensive infrastructural changes and expansions were made between 1955 and 1965. Under the then Pakistan Government's Second Five Year Plan, its science laboratory was developed, a new administrative building was constructed, a new hostel was constructed and separate buildings were constructed for the faculties of Physics, Chemistry and Biology. After the establishment of Dhaka University in 1921, Chittagong College came under its purview. Currently, it offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses and certificates in Bengali, English, Economics, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Mathematics, Statistics, Geography, History, Political Science, Islamic History and Culture, Philosophy, Sociology and Psychology under the National University, in addition to the Higher Secondary Certificate under the Chittagong Education Board.
